JOB PURPOSE

The Assistant Controller applies Generally Accepted Accounting Principles while performing timely accounting functions and procedures. The position will also be responsible for providing support to the Controller and CFO for financial planning, budgeting and forecasting for both MPI and MPI Foundation.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

  1. Prepare and post, as appropriate, the transactions, reconciliations, accruals and adjusting journal entries needed for the timely and accurate provision of month, quarterly and annual accounting records and reports in compliance with financial controls. (30%)

  2. Oversee all revenue-related accounting functions, including recording, reconciling, and reporting of income, contributions, and other income streams; additionally serve as the backup for the Senior Accountant during absences, ensuring continuity in daily accounting operations and financial reporting. (20%)

  3. Monitor and reconcile bank account balances, including and not limited to credit card transactions and reconciliation in multiple currencies, wire transfer activity, and various ACH payments received for revenue streams. (10%)

  4. Analyze variances between actual results, budgets, and forecasts; identify key drivers and recommend corrective actions as needed.  Prepare and distribute updated financial reports to organizational leadership.  Collaborate with stakeholders to develop new reporting tools and dashboards that support strategic decision making. (10%)

  5. Manage accounting for organizational events, including reviewing and reconciling event-related revenue and expenses to ensure accuracy of allocations and proper coding. Record necessary deferrals and accruals in accordance with accounting principles and event timelines. Prepare and deliver financial reports to the Events team, providing insights into budget-to-actual performance and supporting decision-making for future events. (10%)

  6. Monitor fixed assets and lease commitments to ensure accurate tracking and reporting.  Record monthly depreciation and amortization in accordance with accounting standards.  Perform an annual review of the fixed asset register to identify and process asset disposals or adjustments as needed.  (5%)

  7. Ensure compliance with local, state, federal, and international financial reporting requirements. Assist in the preparation of documentation and schedules for external audit. Support Controller with management of the audit and tax process. (5%)

  8. Prepare and maintain all assigned account reconciliations monthly to ensure the accuracy and integrity of the general ledger. Investigate and resolve discrepancies in a timely manner and ensure compliance with internal policies and accounting standards. (5%)

  9. Serve as backup to the Controller for Accounts Payable functions, including reviewing and approving invoices, ensuring timely payments, maintaining vendor records, and overseeing adherence to internal controls and organizational policies. Provide support during peak periods and assist with resolving complex or escalated AP issues. (5%)

Annual Compensation: $90,000 - $105,000

Travel: Less than 5%

Job requirements

EXPERIENCE

  • Seven or more years’ experience in an accounting role.

EDUCATION

  • Bachelor’s degree in accounting, finance, or business; or 10 or more years related experience and/or equivalent combination of education and experience

KNOWLEDGE AND SKILLS

  • Written communication – Writes logical and grammatically correct routine business correspondence

  • Proficient in MS Office Suite (Outlook, Excel, Word, and PowerPoint) 

  • In-depth knowledge of automated financial and accounting reporting systems (Microsoft Dynamics Great Plains)

  • Conflict resolution skills – Negotiates and resolves conflicts among team members and cross-functional partners. Stays composed during controversy

  • Knowledge sharing – Proactively shares information and seeks to share learning with teams across departments, functions, districts, or regions

  • Detailed knowledge of finance, budgeting and cost control principles including GAAP

  • Knowledge of federal and state financial regulations

  • Ability to analyze financial data and prepare financial reports, statements, and projections

  • Detail-oriented and organized; analytical; problem solving
